Supporting the Person Behind the Performance
Talent may open the door. But athletes need more than talent to navigate everything that comes with walking through it.
The Mental Edge is a collaborative initiative presented by Never Journey Alone and CheerBoss, created to support the whole athlete—and the parents, coaches, families, professionals, and communities helping them along the way.
We believe athletic development is about more than becoming stronger, faster, or more skilled. Behind every uniform is a person navigating expectations, confidence, pressure, setbacks, relationships, identity, mental wellness, recruitment, transitions, and decisions that can shape their future.
The Mental Edge exists to make sure those conversations are not overlooked.
Why The Mental Edge Was Started
We often celebrate what happens on the field, court, track, mat, competition floor, or wherever athletes perform. We see the wins, trophies, rankings, highlight reels, and college commitments.
What we do not always see is what it took to get there.
We do not always see the athlete questioning whether they are good enough; the pressure of trying to perform while managing academics, relationships, family responsibilities, injuries, disappointment, and expectations; the parent wondering when to push and when to step back; or the coach trying to develop competitive athletes while also recognizing the emotional and developmental needs of the person behind the performance.
The Mental Edge was created to help change that conversation.
More Than Mental Toughness
Athletes are often taught to push through, shake it off, keep going, and avoid showing weakness. But developing a strong athlete should not require ignoring emotional wellness.
The Mental Edge expands the conversation beyond traditional ideas of mental toughness. We want athletes to develop the skills to understand themselves, communicate effectively, navigate pressure, recover from setbacks, ask for support, build confidence, advocate for themselves, and make informed decisions throughout their athletic journey.
Mental wellness and high performance do not have to compete with one another. They can work together.
Athletes. Parents. Coaches. We Need All Three Voices.
We cannot support athletes in isolation. Athletes experience sports from one perspective. Parents experience the journey from another. Coaches see something different altogether.
The Mental Edge creates opportunities for all three voices to be heard through workshops, interviews, educational resources, community conversations, partnerships, and the future All-Sports Summit.
We are listening directly to athletes, parents, coaches, former athletes, collegiate athletes, and those who have experienced recruitment and higher levels of competition. We want to hear the real stories: what they loved, what challenged them, what they sacrificed, what recruitment really looked like, what helped them succeed, what almost made them quit, and what they wish someone had told them.
You do not have to be famous to have a story that could change someone’s journey.
How Never Journey Alone & CheerBoss Plan to Support the Athletic Community
Never Journey Alone brings a mental wellness and behavioral health perspective to conversations surrounding athletes, families, emotional wellness, communication, coping, confidence, pressure, and support.
CheerBoss brings experience and perspective from the athletic community, including athlete development, sports culture, performance, coaching, competition, and the realities athletes and families encounter as they pursue opportunities at higher levels.
Together, the organizations are creating a bridge between mental wellness and athletic development through workshops, real-story interviews, educational resources, community partnerships, professional collaboration, and future large-scale programming.
The goal is to strengthen the ecosystem around the athlete by creating opportunities for education, conversation, connection, preparation, and support.
